’80s Logo Design drafts
SECOND Set
Please don’t overlook the “General Note,” below.

This is simply the version of “THE EIGHTIES” that Hildee likes (from the Stage Cue promo card), with the same “Gotta Sing” from “Gotta Sing BROADWAY,” which I gave the same width as “THE EIGHTIES.”
“THE EIGHTIES” looks the same here as it does on the Stage Cue screen. However, note how the black, faux-3D extended shadow I’ve always used on ”Gotta Sing” disappears against the black background.

Then I took Draft #10 and replicated it exactly—just copied ’n’ pasted—onto a white background. In that setting, it doesn't look so good; the flaws in “THE EIGHTIES” are more obvious: how the diagonals don’t meet the horizontals perfectly, how the corners don’t match exactly, etc.

As an attempt to correct the issues of both Drafts #10 and #11, I shrank the “Gotta Sing” slightly, so that the height of the small caps (i.e., everything but the “G” and the “S”) matched the height of the letters in “THE EIGHTIES.” To my eye, that created a better, more proportional relationship between the two without deemphasizing “Gotta Sing.”
I then altered the shadowing of “Gotta Sing” so that it would be visible against black, making it metallic so as to match “THE EIGHTIES;” and sent it in the same direction as the 3D effect on “THE EIGHTIES.”

I then took Draft #12 and put it against a white background. Looks pretty good! I changed the “Gotta Sing” shadowing back to black and filled in the 3D extrusion effect on “THE EIGHTIES” with black.
But, as close as this one came, I wasn’t thrilled with how the tops of the letters of “THE EIGHTIES” looked. Also, while I did (as previously noted) change the angle of the “Gotta Sing” shadow to match that of “THE EIGHTIES,” the two 3D effects were somehow not matching up well.
